Ultimate Guide: How to make the most of your trip to Ocracoke, NC

Looking for a different kind of beach adventure? Did you know there is an island on North Carolina’s Outer Banks that is only accessible by boat, ferry, or private plane? Imagine uninhabited pristine shoreline that stretches for miles. Ocracoke Island is a beach adventure like none other.

Our family visits Ocracoke to take in some of the best shoreline fishing in the country, however that is not all that Ocracoke offers. There are adventures to be had by all outdoor enthusiasts. We will get to adventures, but let’s start with the best way to get to Ocracoke.

Transportation

Unless you own a boat or plane then you will be using the NC ferry system to get to Ocracoke.

My husband and I have taken many trips to Ocracoke and have used all three ferry options. Let me give you a little more insight into each option.

Keep in mind that if the winds are high or the seas are extra rough then the ferry system will not run. Check the website and social media regularly.

You have three options…

Hatteras

Cost: Free

Time: 1hr boat time (20 mins driving to village)

Schedule: ncdot.gov (every 30 mins during peak season, every 1hr during off season)

Reservation: Not needed, be prepared for wait during peak season

Though the ferry ride is shorter the drive is longer. You have to access HWY 12 at Nags Head and drive a 2 hours down to the ferry. The drive is beautiful as you can see water most of the way down and each island village has its own quaint feel.

I recommend this path for first time goers on your way to the island. When we took the kids for the first time, we broke up the drive by staying a night in Nags Head.  Then the next day we took our time working down the islands seeing the different lighthouses and exploring.

Here is a great article if you want to know more about this ferry route.

Cedar Island

Cost: $15-$30 (Depending on your vehicle size)

Time: 2hrs and 15 mins

Schedule: ncdot.gov (3-4 times a day)

Reservation: Highly recommended

Cedar Island and Swans Quarter are both comparable. I recommend Cedar Island if you want to break up the drive by enjoying a night in Morehead or Beaufort.

Swan Quarter

Cost: $15-30 (Depending on your vehicle size)

Time: 2hrs and 40 mins

Schedule: ncdot.gov (3-4 times a day)

Reservation: Highly recommended

As you will see below, I recommend using Swan Quarter. However, please take note if you are planning to take the last ferry out for the day and something goes array there is nowhere local to lodge for the night.

There are a few rooms at the ferry but I’m not going to recommend staying there. I would recommend playing it safe and don’t try to catch the last one out of this location.

Recommendation

If you have a short time to get there and just want to “get there” then I would suggest Swan Quarter. From central NC, Swan Quarter is the fastest path to Ocracoke including the ferry ride time. Cedar Island is about 20 mins longer and Hatteras is about 1 hour longer.

Another great recommendation is to plan to go in one way and out another. That way you can cover more ground and have a well rounded trip.

Stay

Our favorite place to stay in Ocracoke is in the hub of the village, Silver Lake. There are a few different options around the lake. It is a great place to park and be able to walk or bike to many destinations on the island.

House/Condo Rentals

Ocracoke Island Realty

We have worked many times with this company and they are easy and quick to book with. If you have any problems finding something you are looking for they are quick to respond to emails and aid in your search.

If you can find a rental available in Pirates Quay Condo Complex, it has breath taking views.

You also have the option of booking many houses through VRBO and Airbnb.

Hotels

If it is a quick getaway and you are not in need of a kitchen here are a couple of our favorite hotels around the lake.

The Ocracoke Harbor Inn

The Anchorage Inn & Marina

Experience

Off Roading

Our favorite aspect of Ocracoke is driving and fishing on the beach. We purchase an off road permit in advance, see this article for more information. Then we can come and go as we please. We can cover more ground and see more of the island from oceanside.

I will caution you to be careful on the beach if you are not use to driving on sand. You will need to have 4WD, let air out of your tires, and use caution while driving. Getting stuck on the beach is no fun and can be costly to get out.

Surf Fishing

Beach fishing is a wonderful activity for the family even if you specifically don’t like to fish. Kids have plenty of room to roam and explore. Parents can relax or participate in the fishing activities. There is something for everyone.

Other Beach Access

There are public beach accesses that you can park and walk to the beach. During season there are lifeguards on duty at these accesses as well as public bathrooms.

Lighthouse

As I mentioned, staying at or near Silver Lake is perfect for walking and exploring the island. The lighthouse is only a few minute’s walk from the lake. My 7 year old daughter and I walked to it this past year and she loved seeing the inside and exploring the grounds.

Shopping

There are a few shops on the lake, but then just a few minutes walk from the lake is the heart of the local crafters shops. This is a fun way to spend the afternoon when you need a break from the beach.

Ice Cream Shop

I’m going to put this under experience because this is an event that has stuck out in our kids memory to this day. My kids loved being able to walk from the condo to get ice cream, something not available to us in the country. This shop also has great coffee options for in the morning.

Food

Howards Pub

The iconic and largest restaurant on the island. This is the first part of civilization that you see when you are driving from the Hatteras island ferry. The atmosphere is fun and the food is tasty.

Jason’s Deli

This is a great lunch destination. Their fresh fish sandwich is to die for. They also have yummy pizza, salad, and sandwich options.

SmackNallys

This is a fun open air spot to go sit on the lake and enjoy light fare food. Often there is live music and, insider tip, sunset at this location is amazing!

Ocracoke Oyster Co

I personally love this space. You feel like you are on your back screened in porch eating fresh seafood. The atmosphere is loud and bar’esk but still kid friendly. There is often live music here.

Ocracoke Variety Store

There is a grocery store on the island that has most of your needs. If you are renting a house or condo you will probably want to cook some of your meals. If there is something specific, you need I would play it safe and bring it with you.

Takeaway

My husband and I have taken many trips to Ocracoke together and now we have started taking our kiddos with us. It is such a fun getaway for the family. Once you land at Ocracoke you are on island time and time moves slower in the best way possible.
